Virtual Identity 0.4.0 finally released

after the new https://addons.mozilla.org – page is online, the now nearly one month-old version of Virtual Identity is released. Automated update should install the new extension on a lot of machines, so hope it works the way it should.
Hi,
[my config: TB 1.5.0.10, Win XP]
I just installed the 0.4 which came through the automatic update of my older version.
Unfortunately some other extensions don’t work if 0.4 is installed.
– The first thing I realized: „Move Search Items“ does not work
– Second: Keyconfig does not work
I did not see any messages in the Error Console which seem to be connected to these problems and stopped testing if other extensions aren’t working as well. Is 0.4 only working with TB 2.0?
Regards, Toby
Hi Toby,
checked the extension with keyconfig (v. 20060828) and functions for keyconfig (1.0.3) on thunderbird (1.5.0.10/linux). Seems to work ok, but haven’t tried it. At all the virtual-identity extension shouldn’t play around with keycodes, only for compatibility with netscape it set’s some keycodes (, , )
tried to check the „Move Search Items“-problem (with version 0.0.6), but this one didn’t run at all on my thunderbird. But this non-working behavior doesn’t seem to change if virtual identity is installed.
Virtual Identity does not change really big things in the 3-pane-Message Window, so I don’t think the problem lies in the extension. And it should run fine with TB1.5 (maybe also earlier versions, not sure).

listen rene! I still have issue with the identy i have in meat space! Once i figure that one out perhaps i will venture into this one!
Hi Tracey,
you can be sure that i had some (maybe virtual) identities reserved especially for you… But maybe we first find a time&space to check out or ‚meat identities‘ before and decide afterwards if it’s worth to get rid of them 😉
Hi rene,
knowing it’s not due to incompatibility with Tb 1.5 I had a deeper look at it and it looks like the problems with „MoveSearchItems“ and „Keyconfig“ had their origin in an incompatibility with „MR Tech Local Install 5.3.2.3“.
Beside the described problems with „MoveSearchItems“ and „Keyconfig“ I realized that the menus where not complete (e.g. instead of the word „Options“ there was just a blank space). Disabling „Cute Menus – Crystal SVG“ did not change anything but disabling „MR Tech Local Install 5.3.2.3“ did solve the other problems.
Maybe you can reproduce this problem and find a solution.
Regards, Toby
hahahahahahaha!
Hey — since new update of V.I., it’s been getting my email wrong- ALOT — especially on replies.
It keeps switching from a custom ID to my main ID — which is causing, not only some embarrassment, but some security problems as well.
I’m writing to people under site or list-specific emails — and have two cases that aren’t working reliably:
1) email address is on my thunderbird list of aliases, and
2) it’s not.
It used to pick correct alias all the time if it came from my ‚domain‘, but now it’s been switching to my main email.
This just started happening with an update a few days ago. Whatever happened — PLEASE, change it back!
Also, I preferred the „+“ option to enter a non-listed alias — made it clear what was going on — the only thing that really needed fixing was it saving backups under created alias names.
Maybe auto-create the alias names? — I wouldn’t mind.
But the problem used to be that it would put up the dialog everytime it was going to temporarily store my outgoing note — and if I wasn’t watching — or even if I was, I’d just see a flash of a dialogue box, but if I was typing at the time, a space bar usually picked the default — and space bars are between lots of words.
But Please make old behavior, at least configurable…it at least worked, but have lost email aliases talking with some people, recently, because they replyed to a _listed_ alias, and it substituted my main email addr (which I don’t publish to most due to spam separation and security concerns) (I get 400-600 spam/day, but mostly to non-main email addrs; no I am not exaggerating….I get daily stats mailed to me each night by a cron-script that processes my Junk folder each night.
HELP, please…great util, but we have a step backward!
Linda
P.S. — Can you have English translations of the captcha feedback messages — wasn’t sure — but it appeared not to take my message the first time (script-block was turned on), so I turned it off and tried again and got a shorter message, which „sounded“ better…but the long message could have been „thank you very much for your input“, and short message could have been „screw off“ ..:-); since I see my posting on refresh, I guess one of them was right! 🙂
Hi,
answered you by email. Please give my a bug-report with the new pre-release, I’ll see what I can do to solve the problems.

Rene
Thanks for virtual identity! Some feedback: I like the 0.4 version. I wish I had a way to configure, when a virtual identity is used and when not: if someone Sents me an email to my default adress, but with any non, default name, e.G.
Sam_Sampllle
VI uses this name instead of the default name (Sam Sample, without typo).
Sorry for double posting: Is it the checkbox „ignore names when comparing for …“ in the options, what I am looking for? I’ll check it out….
Hi Lu,
already had some reply’s on the name issue, so i changed the configuration for names in 0.4.1 a little bit. You can now say that virtual Identity should ignore the found name in any header-field (just add :@ to the header-name) or/and set a default name if the Name was empty. So try the new pre-release http://blog.absorb.it/2007/04/18/virtual-identity-041pre2-released/ (and there will be a 0.4.1pre3 in a few minutes)

Rene
Simply wanted to drop by and say, that VI is still a great extension 🙂 Thanks
Thanks for the feedback, hope you enjoy the new version too. Please report at https://www.absorb.it/virtual-id if you find any problems or have some suggestions.
